How To Increase Your Blog Domain Authority.

Now I am by no means an expert on blogging & what works for one person may not work for another, but at the minute it seems like everyone & their nan is suddenly talking about DA. I have been blogging now for over 5 years and it's only the past few months that I've started seeing the term 'Domain Authority or DA' floating around the blogosphere. I did a little bit of research into it back in May after having Teddy (I tried to be slightly productive during the night feeds!) and discovered that you had to own your own domain, which I didn't at the time.

I realised that if I wanted to get serious about blogging, it was something I should look into and think about. I eventually bought my own domain and watched my DA go from 70 to 0 in the blink of an eye. I know that your DA means fuck all when you are with blogger or wordpress but it was still a kick in the balls watching the number drop right down to non-existent. I have owned my domain now for almost six months and in that time I have seen my DA grow from 0 to 20, which I've heard from other bloggers, is pretty good! I thought I would share my top tips on what I think worked for me and how I increased my blog DA.

WHAT IS DOMAIN AUTHORITY?

Domain Authority or DA is a metric invented by MOZ which is a score on a 100 point scale that predicts how well your blog ranks on search engines. The website updates each month so you can check and see how your blog is doing. You can do this via the MOZ website.

GET A DOMAIN;

The sooner you buy a custom domain, the sooner you can start growing your DA. The age of your domain is a major factor, so the longer you have it the better.

GOOD SEO;

SEO stands for search engine optimization and a site with good SEO will show up on search pages. Place your keywords in headings & label your images with alt text, description and keywords. I am still coming to grips with SEO and trying to improve it where I can!

BUILD YOUR LINKS;

When writing new posts, link back to relevant older posts you have written but don't go crazy! This is known as internal linking. External linking is done via guest posting (the better the websites own DA is, the better quality back link you receive.) Guest posting is great for growing your blogs authority and increase referral traffic.
Commenting on linky's or other bloggers posts are also a great way to get your link out there!

SHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA;

You could have written the best blog post in the world but people need to see it, to share it and then Google will find it! Google judges how good a post is by the amount of views or shares it gets. I think sharing your content is just as important as writing it! It is always the first thing I do after scheduling or publishing a post, I make sure I have tweeted, stumbled and shared it via Instagram!

REMOVE TOXIC LINKS;

Every so often you should go back through your blog and search for any backlinks that are broken or bad. This will allow you to remove any spammy links that are actually damaging your DA rather than helping it. Rather than searching through every single blog post you have ever written, you can use SEOPressor's Link Manager that can help you manage all your links in one place and will state whether the link is BROKEN or ALIVE.

MOBILE-FRIENDLY;

Making sure your blog is mobile friendly is also a great way to improve DA. I read the majority of my favourite blogs on my phone so if your blog isn't mobile friendly, not only are you going to lose lots of readers but it will hurt your mobile search engine rankings.
